"Dragonfly" is my latest private commission for a work on paper. This client has purchased several works from my "Curious Creatures" series and when I got the email saying, "Do you have any Dragonfly pieces?" I knew that I'd be drawing a Dragonfly within the next few days. I painted a few Dragonflies in my "Secret Garden" painting but no stand-alone images. The Dragonfly is a very cool insect with lots of Cultural Mythology surrounding it from good luck to sinister but I just like the way that it looks. It's delicate body doesn't really have a lot of parts to draw so I set out to drive the image with all of the density I could get into the body and then contrast that against the delicate wings. With commissioned works on paper I always make 3 and let the client pick their favorite. Time and time again I usually don't guess which impression they will pick and I always feel good making the extra pieces.
