The Art of Taking Feedback
posted: May 1, 2009
Thank you Greg,T,A,J and all, for inviting me to be part of your community here at Drawger. I hope that you find my contributions interesting. This is a recent job from BusinessWeek. Synopsis:
Suggestions and, yes, criticism from colleagues, bosses, and underlings can be especially valuable to managers in hard times, as their companies try to survive the economic turmoil. But not everyone can take suggestions or criticisms. This article explains how to stop worrying and learn to love listening. It's about being able to decipher valuable things in otherwise harsh statements.
It was a pleasure working with art director, Victor Williams on this assignment. Victor picked the best of the sketches.

Very nice piece, Richard. Welcome to Drawger. I'd enjoy it if you explain how you get your effects. I also agree that the best sketch was selected from amongst a strong submission.
Richard Downs May 1, 2009
Hi Chris, Thank you my friend.
Victor, you are a very intimidating force, of illustration nature!. Even your portrait photograph makes me sit upright :) . To answer your question, the work is created through a printmaking process of drawing on the backside of the paper and transferring oil base ink to the surface of the paper. It requires multiple plates, registration and stuff like that. Very similar to tombstone rubbing or crayola transfers that we did as kids. I am glad that you like my work and, thank you!.
Joe Ciardiello May 1, 2009
Hi Richard, Welcome. Love your ink transfer work.
Mark Fisher May 1, 2009

Lookin' really good. Welcome Richard.
Plus anyone who uses the Creature from the Black Lagoon in a sketch is cool! That movie scared me when I was a kid!
Richard Downs May 2, 2009
Thank you, Joe, Mark, Hanoch, Zina and Mike and here's to keeping vibrant, original comments, and putting the "Wolfman", into my next assignment!.
*Plus, Adams' monster stamps are the real inspiration.
