Brand Damage
posted: May 12, 2009
I did this piece for BusinessWeek as Domino's Pizza grappled with the damage to its brand following a widely viewed prank video made by employees at a North Carolina outlet and put up on YouTube showing a worker sticking cheese up his nose before adding it as an ingredient. This story looked at what can be done to restore this and other brands when such things occur. Art Director Victor Williams, picked my first idea of a play on the pizza box. It was a long shot that Victor would pick my sketch of the company caught with its pants down, but I gave it a try. : )

Richard, love the CPR one but the finish is the most direct. Your gritty effect adds to the tarnished image.

I love the humor in 6, 8, and 9, but the final choice shows the hit on the brand in a simple but clever way.

I agree with Cathleen. I love the strong and simple solution you created on the final piece. The textured grittiness adds a lot.

Welcome Richard!

Great as always Dick. It's interesting to see your sketch process as well. For all out weirdness I like the guy shooting at the stars the best! Cool image.

Great, great, great. Did I say it was great?

Thank you, everybody! I appreciate the acknowledgment. And Ad, I was trying to think of a nice symbol for a Brand, what is a Brand?. A brand is a symbol for a company and I would imagine that every company would consider themselves the Star. It was kind of abstract but I am offended that you would call it weird.:) That was the last happy face that I will ever type.
