"Adrift" | Oil on Paper 12"x15" | personal art for upcoming show

My original concept was to flank the figure with heavy black sea walls but when I got started on the plate it didn't feel right so I abandoned that idea and moved the weight of the composition to the Anchors and over-inked that area to the desired effect. I think that I made the right decision if there is a right or wrong in image making.

Beautiful in concept and form. I really like the high positioning of his eye and also the line from his eye to his nose that hugs his mouth.

Really nice! Love the nautical theme. What show is this?

Zina, thank you!, I increased the size of the eye and raised it a bit and it is amazing how moving features slightly on a face can change expression and attitude. The line from the eye to the mouth is a favorite part, thank you for noticing. Greg, Thanks bro!, I have a local gallery that has been selling my "Couples" pieces for years that want to try out this type of conceptual work, we'll see!

I hope the reaction to your conceptual work is a go, Richard! And yes, great face, too.

Again, a beautiful piece. Do you prep your paper before applying the oil paints?
Richard Downs June 23, 2009
Thank you, Cathleen! Thank you, Victor. It is oil based relief ink. The red layer is completely dry before I apply the black ink drawing and with this technique the paper is raw and not prepped .

Beautiful, Dick! You'll have to give me a demonstration up there this summer!

You've got it Ad!, come on up and lets pull some prints. Also, anyone who is interested can come up and take printmaking classes here at the studio with artist Gwyn Stramler with me doing technical support. wethillstudios.com
